The clock has just struck five. Tibetan monks are chanting the ‘OM’ mantra, their divine voices mystically breaking the silence of this quiet and peaceful winter morning.
This is not a scene from a Buddhist temple but very much from my living room this pleasant winter morning. I am ever so glad that I have won the battle of the bed (as of today, at least, with a zillion alarms that rang until my vivacious toddler began to stir in her sleep) and am relinquishing in what father always termed as ‘the golden hour’ of the day.
The science of Ayurveda and Yoga indicate that an early start to your day sets you into a discipline that promotes better health with improved immunity and better sleep patterns.
Joining the ‘5 AM club’ as termed by motivational guru, Robin Sharma, and embracing radiant dawn means that you have time to plan your day, kick start your morning with exercise or meditation (with Tibetan monk chants on YouTube), invest some time to read and learn something new while your mind is at the prime of freshness, indulge in your favorite hobby or simply enjoy the blissful company of nature with a morning walk while the rest of the world is yet to roll out of their beds.
So here is an invitation to join the ‘5 AM club’ to put ‘Mind over Mattress’.
It definitely takes more than willpower and a few alarms to shake the sleep off and pull yourself out of a warm and cozy bed this winter, but it is sure going to be worth your time!
Good Morning!
Oh yes I absolutely agree with you on this Pranitha! Early morning time is so peaceful and quiet. The challenge is to get ourselves out from the comfort of our beds, specially in winter. It only takes some will power on our part initially. Once we start enjoying that golden time, we may not need even the alarm clock. 😊

It is pure bliss to be in the quiet with none for company. The chants only add to the feeling. It has become the best part of the day for me. Yes, getting out of the bed is the big deal but with practice it will only get easier, as I see it already has!

Good afternoon, Deepika! Absolutely. Your feeling is mutual. That is the best time of the day to think, plan, and indulge in something we love to do with just ourself for company!

Good Morning and it sure does, agree with you 100%. Great post and loved the picture of a guy so free at the break of dawn, one with himself and nature. Great words.

good one I’ve been a ‘5 AMer’ since long. though not the kind to go for a walk or to indulge in yoga, the morning hours are spent primarily for my literary activities, and undoubtedly, the mind and the brain are at their best!

If that is a time that is best for you, then it is okay to get another hour of sleep, cozy and warm on a lovely winter morning.

Pulling myself off the bed, especially this winter, is my biggest challenge, but I must say the results of this effort are worth your time. I feel myself to be more productive and so much more happier. You could try one day at a time.

Pranitha…I am an early bird as I have no other choice, but not exactly for reaping the benefits of the golden hour, on the contrary, the chores of the day have to start at that hour to get bfast and lunch going:)
But yes, there is absolute bliss in the pre dawn hours ..the brahmamuhurtham time!

Brahmamuhurtham, I distinctly remember my grandfather using that. I used to be in your shoes, Sunitha, getting up an hour early to start my work going but after a particular weekend where I woke up before time and having enjoyed some peaceful time for myself doing what I love doing best, I came up with another plan of working out my lunch and breakfast around what is left of my ME time.

Thank you, Sunitha! It requires a lot of discipline but I love the energy I enjoy for the rest of the day as well as the productivity thanx to the bonus time. Was just looking at your reunion video, will get back to that!

I joined the 6 am club a few months ago and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I thrive on schedules and my 9 month old usually wakes up around 7:30 or 8 so I have some time to myself to shower or blog or whatever I want before she wakes up. I have had so much more energy now and when I go to bed at night I look forward to waking up in the morning.

Thank you so very much for reading and leaving your feedback! You are right about the productivity and the energy bit.It is something I started just to challenge myself into pulling out of bed but this habit is one I look forward to every night.

Ah how I want to join the club. But I also love that peaceful time between 11pm to 3am! I am a night owl and I love early mornings too! Waking up is a very very very verrrrrrry tough job for me. If I had a choice, I would sleep during noon and be awake at night and in the morning. But well, that doesn’t work that way right? Besides, I really can’t sleep in the middle of the day 😦

Right from my childhood, my father always said that the best and the most productive part of the day is the morning, so it still stays with me. I too have a big problem waking up in the morning but I have come to realize that now the early mornings are my very own favorite time. It is up to you to decide what best suits you, though. So glad you want to try to join the club too 🙂
